On the Table :: A Giveaway!

I try hard, I really, really do, but I am not a natural at cooking. Luckily for me I’m shacked-up with a natural. Alex tells me stories of when he was a child, taking over the kitchen and caking the room in flour to experiment with a new recipe. I never did that. I learned to set a table and cook basic meals at home economics class at school, not from my parents, neither of whom were outstanding cooks. We were a “cook because you have to” kind of family.

As a mother of three I have had to learn to cook all over again. My meals are still quite plain compared to Alex’s, but I have over the past few years expanded my repertoire  and started to see the creativity in cooking as well as seeing the savings I can make if I cook from scratch.

What has “hooked” me most into cooking is being able to combine gardening and food. I love to garden, so growing my own food has seen me collecting recipes and cook books and generally  pushing myself out of my comfort zone as I find recipes to match what I’ve grown.

The other “in” to cooking for me is living in a region so abundant in wonderful, locally grown food and farmers markets.  A photographer I worked with at the paper said to me once: “There is no excuse for not eating well on the North Coast.” I wholeheartedly agree. No excuse for not learning how to cook, either!

Today I am going to cut into a pumpkin I grew and attempt the pumpkin lasagne featured on page 28 of the Byron Farmers Market 10 Year Anniversary Recipe Collection. I only recently got my hands on this little book (more like a “mook” than a book, it’s very sweet) and I’ve been poring over the photography and simple recipes from local farmers and chefs.

As well as the lasagne, I’ve got my eye on the recipe for roast tomato soup which can also be turned into a pasta sauce and that will also be my excuse tomorrow to visit my favourite stall at the market - Coopers Shoot Tomatoes.

While I’d love to invite you all over to taste-test the pumpkin lasagne, alas, that’s not possible.

Instead, the publisher, Remy Tancred from Sample magazine, has generously offered two copies of the Byron Farmers Market 10th Anniversary Recipe Collection  to give away to two lucky readers of The Byron life. (Thanks Remy!)

Not much on my table here this week as we're in the process of moving, but i noticed our new place has a very healthy looking rosemary bush out the front so baked free-range chicken, potato and rosemary will be on the menu when we move in.

So there will be zucchini & corn fritters, relish, lots of summer salads, zucchini cake, bbq vegies, omelets and more this week. It's so nice to make up meals around what is abundant in the garden! Our pumpkins are a little way off but I look forward to pumpkin lasagne in the near future too!!! xx

  5. I've only been to the Byron Farmers Market once and it wonderful; definitely the best I've been to! Our local market is much smaller but still pretty good ;-) -http://cumquatsandquinces.blogspot.com.au/2013/01/myrtleford-produce-market.html

As we finally start to harvest some summer veggies down here in Victoria, we are combining them with our abundance of eggs from our lovely chooks. So on the table for lunch yesterday we had quiche with tomatoes, basil and zucchini, and later this week it will be spanish-style potato, garlic and leek tortilla. We've also been picking lots of berries and cherries, though usually they don't actually make it to the table!
    Mmm I love summer! :-)

  6. Ooooooh count me in, I think it would be love at first sight for me and this book!

On our table this week is lots of onion and tomato gravy. Just tomatoes from the bush that have over-ripened slightly, an onion, all sliced up and boiled in a saucepan on the stove. A little seasoning, a 1/2 teaspoon of sugar. It's so simple yet divine on sausages, potatoes, eggs or straight over pasta. Delish! x

  8. Hi! Followed, liked and shared!!! Our dinner one night this week will be some sort of pesto pasta, our basil has finally shot up - ready to eat :) I'm working on making more from scratch and cutting out the crap to help nourish our family. We love the markets and go whenever we come up for holidays!! It is one of the highlights of our holidays, and needless to say, we eat til we pop, and then cram it all into the pram to eat more later!!
    Thanks for the opportunity!!

  13. Sounds great little book! Well I'm planning on doing a Hungarian Gulasch with Hayters Hill Beef accompanied by Hungarian handmade noodles. Made from eggs, wholemeal Flour and Water with a salad. I also thought it ll be great to make tomato sauce for the larder as Cooper Shoot Tomatoes have seconds which would be perfect for that!

  22. Our summer meals usually entail, fresh salads and lots of coriander, mint (from our small garden!), parsley...we are loving fish pasta's with mini roma tomatoes, any fish suits, herbs again, anchovies tossed through, simple and delish! I also love crunch, raw vege's sliced on the plate - carrots, celery, capsicum with condiments and meats. We teach our children that you must eat 'All your natural colour's' and this has been really effective! ie white, yellow, green & red. Love the giveaway and really hope to travel to Byron Bay in the near future. xx

  23. Our only child starts prep this week so dinner will need to be earlier and will need to be dishes that he doesn't moan and whinge and negotiate over every bite. I guess pasta, fish and chips, chicken and veges and cold rolls? I really should be better organised by Sunday night.

  31. hey Megan,
I am totally hopeless at meal planning and normally go with what we feel like. It is always a vegetarian meal and this week as it feels a little colder than usual I feel like a comforting pasta bake.
    book looks amazing!

  32. We have a busy week for meals this week. Tonight we are off to our daughters place. Tomorrow night a farewell dinner here for one of her friends (including her and her fiance and my parents) that has to go back to Korea, so Ravioli, a salad and garlic bread on the menu for that. Thursday will most likely be something I cook from my defrosted meat (power outage due to the REALLY bad weather - can't waste anything). That will most likely be a sausage casserole. I'm thinking roast pumpkin and pasta Friday (we try and have vegetarian at least twice a week). Our other daughter will be with us Saturday night so she always gets to pick what she wants. Sunday is a BBQ for our eldest daughter's 21st and I have chicken satay sticks, chick pea patties with home made bread rolls and a couple of salads on the menu.....and of course a birthday cake!
Thanks for including me in your give away!
    Kindest regards
    Andrea Saunders
