Reporting on:: A local mum wins $5k to not shop!

A PLEDGE to stay away from shops has paid off for a mother-of-two, Melissa Gulbin, who has just won $5,000 to promote the concept of buying nothing new.

Knowing first-hand the challenges of sticking to my Buy Nothing New in October pledge, it was wonderful to discover that a local mum won $5,000 in the Buy Nothing New Month competition for promoting awareness of the campaign. Go Melissa!

Even more fun to get to report on it for the paper...

I have to say it again (I know I say it a lot) but I do love my job!!

Here's the link to the story.

Happy Monday folks.

That's great that she won...i read the original story about her holding the swap and thought it was a fab idea. We used to do something similar including toys, with our community playgroup and all the parents participated.Lovely story Megan.

Good article. A friend did something similar at her church. Everybody brought all the yard sale type stuff they wanted to unload, then shopped for what they needed. There was this tall cylinder on a table and you could make up your own prices and toss money in the cylinder, or if you were strapped, then it was free. I think the cash was to start their building fund. Pretty cool, huh?
