My Creative Space :: Cardigan to Wool Longies for Baby

Well, I finished making the wool longies for Maddison, and I’m happy with how they have turned out. I’m yet to try them on her though, so that will be the real test. The photos I have to show you today are of the longies still drying after being slightly felted and lanolised.

I’m thinking the pants will be worn with the flowers at the back, but I’ll wait to see how they look on her before deciding.

I didn’t photograph the cardigan before cutting it up – so instead I have roughly sketched it for you to show how I went about re-fashioning it into these pants. The cardigan was bought for $4 at an op-shop in as new condition and knit from 100% soft angora wool. The flowers embroidered on were a feature I wanted to somehow incorporate into pants for Maddison.

This time I used a baby pants pdf pattern that I downloaded (free) from make baby stuff.com. The pattern is simple to use and I will use it again to make more baby pants.

I cut each leg as shown in the sketch, trying to keep as much of the flowers as I could, with the side seam of the cardigan kept intact and used as the “fold” part of the pattern.

I then added an extra band of felted pink wool (from another recycled sweater) to make the waistband.

These little wool longies will be worn on cool nights straight over a cloth nappy and this is the lanolin wash I use on all of Maddison’s wool soakers. You can get it online from Nature’s Child if you’re looking for some.

Now, I just have to wait for them to dry so I can see how cute she looks in them!

  3. ooh they are so cute! Id say flowers at the back too :) I also love your post about the film you saw 'This way of life'. I am really looking forward to watching it though also hesitant as I sometimes find movies like this a bit depressing. They leave me questioning if Im doing everything I can to live how I want to live, and feeling restrained by society and practicalities and not sure how to balance both.

  8. Aw, thanks everyone for the kind words on the baby pants. That makes me very happy ;)

Bec - This Way of Life film is fabulous. You won't come out depressed, it's not at all a new-agey or pretentious film that tells you how you "should" be living. It's simply a beautiful portrait of a family living it rough, but sticking to an inspiring set of conscious parenting principles. It's very moving. Hope you get a chance to see it.
