In Our Garden :: A Pond Re-Use Project

Driving to work early one morning I saw this fibreglass pond on the side of the road with a "FREE" sign taped to it... how I could I resist? It was duly plonked on the back seat and off I went about my business. I have no plans for a pond in my garden right now- not with an inquisitive toddler around - but I immediately had another idea when I saw the pond.
Out came the drill, the base was punctuated with a series of holes and before you knew it...

...we had ourselves a new garden bed. It has been filled with potting mix topped with organic sugar cane mulch and propped up on a couple of bricks to allow for good drainage.Growing in our new "pond" garden is sage, Vietnamese mint, oregano, thyme and some colourful marigolds. A bit of  an eclectic mix of herbs and flowers, but that's what I had ready to plant, so in they went.

The little kids are loving this new addition to the backyard garden area - there is something about its kid-friendly height and organic shape that really draws them in. It's at grabbing height and just perfect for little hands to dig in and have fun. I'm not sure how the herbs will survive the joy!

Even the big sister has been in on the act.
(Just out of sight in this picture are two nuddie little people squealing for that hose to rain down on them!)

Alex hates it when I drag home junk from off the side of the road (or from garage sales, or op-shops, for that matter). But, in this case, I reckon it was well worth it, don't you?

  4. What a perfect garden bed, I love the organic shape.

We have spent the afternoon transforming some old car tyres and planks of wood into a toddler playland :)
