Last Friday I was asked by my paper to write an opinion piece on Julia Gillard's appointment as PM, from a mother's perspective, and for today's Monday Mama post I give you the link to that editorial...
It sums up my feelings on what is, I feel, a watershed moment for feminisim in this country, and fills me with hope for my girls' futures.
I do wish we could have welcomed our first female PM in circumstances other than a messy political takeover... but, hooray for Julia all the same!

The 2006 Archibald Prize finalist portrait of the new Prime Minister is now on display at the Tweed River Art Gallery - moving from the back rooms to a prime position on the Gallery’s walls just in time for the Salon des Refuses exhibition at the gallery.

I must admit it took me a few days to settle into the idea of JG as PM. Not until I saw the Age Neilson polls(she's knockin' down Abbott thank the Lord) and when the sad/quivery face of Kev had faded from my memory , have I truly embraced the idea of her leading Labor to victory.
And coming from a jewellers perspective...I hope she only wears the work of Australian designers. Who ever made the necklace she wore announcing her coup would be a proud person. Yes, I notice the important things!!!!!
Great editorial. I particularly like how you made sure it made no difference what your politics are or whether or not you like JG (personally I love her and am still drinking champagne in her honour!), she has changed the world for our daughters.
I loved your opinion on the situation. It's not about the politics, it's about the fact that if we work hard, we can choose to do whatever we want in life, and that's a great message for all young women.
PS - I also noticed that great necklace she was wearing the other noght, and also noticed on tonight's news that she had an outfit that was crying out for a Betty Jo pendant.
PPS - I've just broken one of my own rules. It's not about what she's wearing, it's about how she does the job!
Great editorial. It has certainly been a great moment for the women of our country - especially our daughters. Our son's too... because they now can see that their girlfriends, partners and daughters can make it all the way to the top aswell.
Julia has made all kinds of firsts... I suspect she is probably the first unmarried and first childless PM too - have to check but I think she probably is.
